Day 31 – the final countdown

Day 31 – Rabidiso to O Pedrouzo, 22.5km. 5.5 hours

I cant explain how im feeling right now. Im exactly 20km off Santiago. I have walked 798km since starting on the 1 September. The original plan was to walk from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago but now Finisterre is in my sights and i have the time, im going to continue on walking an extra 85kms after Santiago. Why not…

Im so excited, so relieved, so proud and actually amazed i have got this far. A part of me just wants to keep walking!

Today was only 22.5kms and it felt like a breeze. We set off at 7am into the misty rain. The entire morning was in mist, raining occasionally but not enough to be bothered by it to put on a jacket.

We stopped at a lovely cafe for breakfast 9km in. Such a great spot. I got the biggest custard pastry, toast, coffee and fresh orange juice for 5 euro. We sat watching the tv and chatting to the spanish. There is a referendum happening in Barcelona today as to whether that region will become independent from Spain and thus the EU.

I have been seeing this guy for over a week now – weve never said more than hola to each other but always smile and acknowledge each other whenever we are in cafes or the same albergue. To be honest im unsure where i know him from or if i have even met him before. But we’ve this nice friendship thing going.

He was in the cafe watching the referendum with us as he’s from Barcelona. So we finally met, Fran, from Barcelona.

Walking today was a little depressing. The path was just a well formed path, heaps of people, it was easy going but really humid!

We all had our music on for most of the day. Turns out My Chemical Romance ‘welcome to the black parade’, gets you power marching up hills!

Anna wants it known in my diary, that while she may be american, she is not a trump supporter! She Hates Trump! And have it also known if you say Trumps proud of you Anna, she doesnt really like it.

Anna, having lived in Honduras for 3 years speaks Spanish with a mexican accent. So we get a lot of joy when asked by spanish people ‘why do you speak spanish so well. And why do you sound mexican’. We just tell people shes Mexican anyways.

As we have the afternoon off, we just sat by the main road eating a disgusting amount of carbs, coffee and beer. Before all of us downloading sappy nicholas sparks movies to go home and watch in bed.

20kms in the morning. 20km!thats it. I set out with no plans other than to walk the camino and make it to Santiago and tomorrow that will be completed. Cant really comprehend it just yet.
